Activated charcoal is the standby a lot of households keep for the bloated, gassy, morning-after days. This is that, in simple capsules for occasional use. One honest rule upfront, because it is the one that matters: charcoal binds to things in your gut, including your medicines and other supplements, so keep it well apart from them and do not take it every day.

About this Charcoal

Made for the occasional off day

Some days your stomach just is not right: bloated, gassy, heavy after a rough night. Activated charcoal is the old standby for exactly those days, taken to help with indigestion, diarrhea and the bloated, gassy feeling. It is a keep-in-the-cupboard product, not a daily vitamin.

A short, honest list of what it is for

  • Settling the stomach — taken to help with indigestion, diarrhea and the bloated, gassy feeling.
  • The morning after — a go-to for hangovers, helping you feel a bit more human.
  • Good to keep on hand — an easy capsule to have in the cupboard for the occasional off day.

The one rule that actually matters

Here is the honest part, and it is not a footnote. Charcoal binds indiscriminately, which is exactly why it works, but it means it will also bind to your medication and your other supplements and reduce how well they work. So space it well apart from everything else you take, use it occasionally rather than daily, and do not take it for more than two days at a time. If you keep some for a poisoning emergency, take it immediately and always seek medical help as well.

It is charcoal processed to be very absorbent. Ours is activated charcoal (500mg) in easy capsules, used to help bind things in the gut.

How do I take it?

For everyday upsets, 2 to 4 capsules every 6 hours, for no more than 2 days. The label lists separate amounts for poisoning, where you take it immediately and seek help.

Can I take it every day?

No. Charcoal is for occasional use, not daily. Do not take it for more than 2 days at a time.

Can I take it with my medication?

Charcoal binds to medication and other supplements and reduces how well they work, so keep it well apart from everything else you take and check with your healthcare practitioner first.

It usually works quite quickly for digestive upsets. For poisoning, take it immediately and get medical help.
