Most castor oil on a shelf was pulled out of the seed with a solvent. This one was cold-pressed and is hexane-free, 500ml of it, nothing added. For dry skin, hair, scalp and brittle nails, and for the oil packs people use it for. External use only.

About this Castor Oil Hexane-Free

How it was pressed is the whole difference

Castor oil is castor oil until you look at how it was extracted. The cheap route uses hexane, a solvent, and then removes it again. Cold-pressing skips that entirely: the seed is pressed, the oil comes out, and that is the product. When you are putting it on your face or your scalp regularly, the difference is worth the few extra rand.

What people actually use it for

  • Dry skin, hair and nails: used to nourish and moisturise dry skin, hair and nails.
  • Everyday redness: smoothed on to soothe everyday redness and irritation.
  • Scalp and roots: worked into the scalp to condition it and support healthy circulation at the roots.
  • Cleansing: used to gently cleanse dirt and excess sebum.
  • Brittle nails and cuticles: used to soften brittle nails and dry cuticles.
  • Blemish-prone skin: used to help keep acne-causing bacteria in check.

A 500ml bottle is a lot of oil

This is the size you buy when it has become part of the routine rather than an experiment: hair masks, oil packs, a bath oil, a massage oil, or just a nightly bit on the ends and the cuticles. Apply it directly to skin or hair. Patch-test before your first use, keep it away from your eyes, and do not put it on broken skin. It is for the outside of you only.

Common questions

What does hexane-free mean?

Hexane is a solvent used to pull oil out of seeds cheaply, and it is then removed again. Hexane-free means it was never used. This oil was cold-pressed instead.

How do I use it?

Apply it directly to your skin or hair. People use it to moisturise, as a massage or bath oil, or as an oil pack. Patch-test before the first use.

How is this different from the Ozonated Castor Oil?

This is plain cold-pressed castor oil, a liquid, in a 500ml bottle. The ozonated version is put through ozone, which sets it into a thicker balm you keep in the fridge, and it comes in 25ml and 50ml. Different texture, different job, different size.

Can I take it by mouth?

No. This is for external use only.

Will it clog my skin?

Patch-test first and see how your skin takes it. If you get any irritation, stop using it.
